A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
